Poetry & People's War

[Editor's Note. The English version follows to the original version in
Spanish. The author is "Jovaldo," Jose Valdivia Dominguez, a young
Communist poet murdered in the concentration camp of El Fronton
along with other 300 political prisoners by the genocidal armed forces
of the old Peruvian state.]

CANTOS A MY PUEBLO

Parte IV

Perdonen que hoy no escriba
versos a las rosas,
o que de mi conciencia no surjan
pensamientos burgueses,
o que mis manos no se vistan
de perfumes y joyas.
Perdona madre,
si hoy no te ayude en casa
perdona, pero es que...Ya no
puedo!
no puedo caminar por las calles viejas
llenas de basura y soledad.
Ya no quiero ser aquel hijo
mimado,
mientras la sangre pasa por nuestra puerta,
mientras el hijo del vecino
muerde su pena
por el pan que no vendra.
Perdona tu, vida,
Perdonen,
pero es mi pueblo
que en campo y ciudad esta
luchando.

SONGS TO MY PEOPLE (IV)
by Jovaldo

Forgive me if today I don't write
verses to the roses,
or that out of my conscience do not emerge
bourgeois thoughts,
or that my hands are not dressed up
with perfumes and jewels.
Forgive me mother,
if today I did not help you at home,
forgive me, but it's just that...I no longer can!
I cannot stroll through the ancient streets
full of garbage and loneliness.
I no longer want to be that spoiled child,
as long as the blood
runs just outside our door,
as long as the child of the neighbor bites his pain
for the bread that will never come.
Forgive me, you, life,
if as a child I thought carry you
into a luxurious home, of a plutocrat,
and dress you with dreams of fairies
forgive me, but it's that...
my bllod is reborn in the dawn,
in my chest,
in the dream about a new land.
My cry taints the wind in bright red,
my hands kiss the earth,
it's that my conscience stood on its feet,
it's that the light of my blood
has awaned with the song.
And my song is the song of the wind,
of the punas [highlands];
of the wheat field.
Is my word
the luminous word of the poor.
Forgive me you all that today I do not write
what you like for me to write, alienated.
It's that the earth is trembling,
the old world is falling,
the murmur of the river gets nearer
sweeping the walls in its current.
And I do not say this
just because I want to say it,
history says it,
the masses of workers say it
rising up
looking at the punas,
conquering the wheat fields,
destroying misery
and delivering their blood
as beautiful as sunrise.
It's the luminous shine of the people
marching on,
who see the blossoming of the New World.
Forgive me,
but it is my people
who are struggling in the fields and the cities.
