Re: What's getting over me? Too much interaction with imperialist agents! The internet is the fifth column of imperialism!
Zeynep,
I really don't want to get into this, I swear, but, I should correct
myself, or make myself more clear (it is a permanent condition). Jazz NOW
suffers from classism more than racism, but then they are fighting over the
corpse. Jazz is dead. It is now a frou-frou liberal "cause", that bears
little resemblance to music-making. Jazz came, changed teh musical landscape
forever, and then left, leaving the changes behind. Jazz right now is
tokenism in elitist music, or old guys doing the real thing, or fanatical
devotees worshiping at the church, and singing the old songs. Frankly, i
would much rather hear Winton Marsalis play Purcell or Bach than his own
jazz. It's not that his music is bad, it's just that it's sad, and a little
morbid.
