>Escalating attacks on immigrant workers by law enforcement
>agencies including the Immigration and Naturalization
>Service, the Border Patrol and others are the focus of two
>recent resolutions by labor organizations.
>
>Within days of the April beating of two Mexican workers by
>Riverside, California sheriff's deputies, the national Labor
>Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) issued a
>statement calling the attack "a classic example of the
>dangers inherent in an anti-immigrant climate fostered by
>those who seek political advantage by scapegoating
>immigrants, in this case Mexican immigrants, or by falsely
>blaming them for all the ills of society."
>
>The statement, issued by LCLAA's national president Ralph
>Jimenez, said, "As the Hispanic voice of the AFL-CIO and its
>1,400,000 Hispanic union members, we protest with every
>fiber of our being such treatment of human beings as if they
>were animals."
>
>LCLAA noted that the U.S. has been built by immigrants, and
>said, "immigrant-bashing runs against the grain of the
>American democratic tradition."
>
>LCLAA also called the beatings a sign of "a more widespread
>illness in the land - the growth of intolerance and racism
>..." In addition to demanding justice in the Riverside
>beatings, LCLAA said, "Even more important, we must
>reexamine and reject our xenophobic approach to dealing with
>our sisters and brothers from Mexico whose only crime is to
>cross the border to earn enough money to feed their hungry
>families."
>
>This week the San Francisco Labor Council passed a
>resolution condemning both the Riverside beatings and a
>later car chase in the same area by Border Patrol agents
>resulting in the deaths of seven immigrants and injuries to
>18 others. The Council called the attacks part of "an
>alarming escalation in attacks on immigrant workers."
>
>It said the publicized attacks were "only the tip of the
>iceberg of abuses suffered by immigrants," including rape,
>unwarranted detention, harassment and a climate of fear in
>which immigrants have avoided health services, leading to at
>least two deaths.
>
>The context was set, the council said, by a nationwide anti-
>immigrant campaign by ultra-right Republicans such as
>California Gov. Pete Wilson, Senator Robert Dole and House
>Speaker Newt Gingrich. This anti-immigrant campaign included
>Proposition 187 and "son of 187" laws authored by Sen. Alan
>Simpson and Rep. Lamar Smith.
>
>The council pointed out that the same giant corporations
>whose policies have caused millions of immigrant workers to
>seek jobs in the U.S. are downsizing at home, privatizing,
>contracting out and forcing U.S. workers into minimum wage
>jobs. The statement emphasized that "attacks against workers
>from any country are attacks on all workers in the U.S. as
>well." The Council reiterated its pledge "to defeat the
>Republican ultra-right elected officials who created the
>climate and policies giving rise to such anti-immigrant
>attacks."
