Louis: Mike Dean raises some fascinating questions, some of which I have
been planning to look into for some time. Two of my favorite Marxist
thinkers, Perry Anderson and Ellen Meiksins Woods, have written
extensively about class relations in classical antiquity and feudalism. I
would recommend looking for Wood's "Peasant-Citizen and Slave: The
Foundations of Athenian Democracy" and Anderson's "Passages from Antiquity
to Feudalism". These two, alas, are items that I've been meaning to read
for years but haven't found time for.

I would recomend reading Perry Anderson, but reading it with some
caution. His coverage of the technological base is almost non-existent,
and he attributes to Weber ideas that Kautsky had expressed earlier.
