Eleonora Castano Ferreira 1941-1996
The Brecht Forum announces with regret that Eleonora
Castano Ferreira died today after a long illness.
Eleonora was born in Rio de Janeiro and, together with
her brother, Joao Paulo Castano Ferreira, worked as an
organizer in Rio's favelas during the 1970s and 1980s.
After receiving a series of death threats, they came to
the United States, where they worked as popular educators
with trade unions and labor consortiums.
Eleonora was instrumental in establishing the Institute
for Popular Education, a Brecht Forum project, and she
was intimately involved with this project until her
death. She also served on the Board of Directors of The
Brecht Forum.
Eleonora was a friend and comrade, and she will be
missed. A memorial service will be held at a future date.
