Re: Capitalist collectivization
I agree with Louis that the petty bourgeiosie will split
in a revolutionary process and that the tendency will be
that the stronger the workers the more of them will be
drawn to our side - and that this tendency will be strongest
in the lower parts of these layers. The same goes BTW for
the so called "new middle class".
Those in doubt should read (f.x. Trotsky "On France")
about the general strike in 1936.
Of course one should also allow for the concrete
evaluation of *how big* and *which* parts of the
farmers most likely to come to our side in
each country.
About the structure of food production in a socialist
society, I think we will have to experiment a little.
Actually it is hard - and needs the strictest
scientific arguments - to find out exactly how it
should look.
In the industrialized countries with only 10-15%
directly involved in farming, the *size* in itself
is not the main issue. In the parts of the world where
the number of farmers/peasants is larger of course
a more social approach is to be used - like the
one Louis stated.
The tasks for socialist food production are however
quite simple to outline:
1. The immediate task of making sure that no one in
the world dies because of hunger. This is probably
done best done by large scale investment in relatively
low-cost-technology farming. (That doesn't need to be
"old" technology - Computers is one such low-cost-
technology.)
2. Produce healthy food for all. And safe for the
workers.
3. Produce with a minimum of - especially long term -
harm on the natural ressources. That means ecology.
4. All this of course under the control of the
workers councils.
But as I said - the specific structures will have to
be considered carefully. We have very few experiences
with economy and ecology in large scale farming yet.

Watch your language, Louis :-)
