A very large part of hog production in Manitoba is collectivised. Indeed
the production takes place on collective farms communally owned by Hutterite
communities. They also own a slaughtering and packing plant. So successful
are the Hutterites that some provinces have agreements with them
that limit the expansion of individual colonies. If anyone tells you
that collective farms are inefficient tell them to go and study the
Hutterites. There are liberal and Conservative branches. The Liberal
groups let their women wear more individualised clothing and adornment
and are more into "luxury" goods, whereas the Conservatives are more
puritanical and frugal. Clothing is usually made by the colonists and
material is bought in bulk. Conservatives wear mostly black but liberal
women may be quite colorful and embellish the basic clothing.
Both groups are willing to latch on to any technology
that increases production though. A liberal colony near here did get into
financial problems and a brother Conservative colony bailed them out
but only when they agreed to an SAP (Structural adjustment policy)
 that required they abandon their luxurious and sinful ways, better than
getting in the clutches of the World Bank or IMF anyway.
