Re-perusing that Scientific American article about fishing, I find
that "To catch $70 billion worth of fish, the fishing industry incurred costs
of $124 billion" This over-capitalization leads to conclusions like "One
stud in the US found that the annual profits of the yellowtail flounder
fishery could increase from zero to $6 million by removing more than 100
boats." Thus: "Unable to sell their chief asset without major financial loss
owners of (uneconomic) vessels are forced to keep fishing to repay their
loans and are caught in an economic trap."
I think the same may well be true of many agricultural producers.
Do with it what you will, I'm not sure what it means.
