The original issue was Jimmy Hoffa. Although the entity of the
Hoffa case is complex, the reality of Mafia unionism is simple. When the
US government took over a New Jersey Teamsters' local, it was a boon to
the union movement. The local was the personal property of Tony
Provenzano, a made capo in the Mafia. While the presence of "Tony Pro" on
one's team was probably a large inducement for managements and owners to
settle contract negotiations, old Tony was no friend to labor. Criminals
have to be punished and the state has to do it.
