Louis,
I think often cattle were not used as the actual barter item but as
a *measure* of value.
If X was said to be worth 1 cattle, then it would trade for 2Y (each
worth 1/2 cattle) or 1/2 Z (worth 2 cattle). Cattle as such would not
trade hands.
