PCP and gays
While I doubt if the oppression of gay people is high
on the list of PCP priorities, I have to say, up to now,
the PCP appears to have specifically denied all
accusations of harrassment or execution of gay people.
There are outstanding accusations of execution of gay
people by the *MRTA* that have not yet been denied on this l'st.
If any supporters of the MRTA or anyone with further information
I would ask them to clarify this point.
It does seem to me to be part of a wider question of liberation
struggles in third world countries and their attitudes to
issues of sexuality and gender. It is good that some historical
comparisons are being made with Cuba, of an analytical non-judgemental
kind. I do think that to apply the most "democratic" standards about
sexuality from "advanced" imperialist countries to other countries
is potentially problematic, especially when the debate has hardly
been concluded in imperialist countries.
Incidentally one of the features of the PCP activity appears
to be the degree of activity of women, who of course are especially
oppressed in third world countries, although the concrete evidence
seems to be that their position in Peru must be one of the worst in
the world.
That does not of course mean any simplistic conclusion that the PCP
is wonderful to women. Is it a good thing or a bad thing that it
was a woman fighter who killed Maria Elena Moyano? These things
are potentially extremely complicated.
But the PCP appears to be an organisation that has thought to some
extent at the very least, about issues of gender, if not issues of
sexuality.
