Re: swp

Mr. Miller,

I've really never heard anything so stupid in all my life as the SWP
policy on "allowing" commies to have union positions. Aside from the overtly
odious nature of the "allowing" concept, this shows the seemingly innate
irrational sectarianism in the left. If a person cannot discharge the
responsibilities of an important position without constantly inflicting the
totality of his own views, then he is a bad leader. He will not cause
conflict because he is a communist, but because he is an incompetent pedant.

Naturally a revolutionary consciousness will pervade a true
believer's actions. However, he should not be so self-involved and
doctrinaire that he cannot perform a job. There are time, place and manner
restrictions for all types of human endeavor, and politics - even
revolutionary politics - is no exception. If you are trying to make a case -
for socialism or anything else - you make it in the way best calculated to
get your point across. Clearly one has to start a lesson with the basics.
You don't see a high school math teacher attempting to inflict the year's
curriculum in a single day. By the same token, a communist doctor does not
interrupt getting a patient's history with diatribe.

COMPROMISE is essential in the nature of politics. As a leader, you
make your best case for the ideal path, then lead where the majority takes
your vision.
