Mr. Proyect,
I don't think we can combat ULTRA-rightism. These are desperate
people with weird outlooks to solve their own personal problems. What we can
do is undermine the inevitably populist spin fascists put on their bile.
Socialism has to define populism, or at least economic populism.
I think the people who get excited about Buchanan and some of the
libertarians are the very same people that Socialists can excite. They may
be a little daft, but they are looking (or groping) for a consistent
"revolutionary" logic. It seems to me that the new right wingers never
really get off the ground until they include some manner of economic
populism. Even Gingrich has spun such a thread in his web. Evidence for
this is the huge number of people who have come to believe that if the
government "got off their backs" they would all be rich, and that somehow
Democrats are stealing money for the poor that Republicans would otherwise
provide.
Fortunately for us, these messages ultimately get boiled down to
something like the above which strains the limits of credulity.
