No! Or?

I like the way you pose the question - because the question is a real =
one.

I have just started to subsribe to this list, and my very fast (one week =
or so) impression is, that too many of the questions are ... eeh "a =
little academic" - although there is also some good debate.

Let me start by introducing myself (This subject would be as good as =
any):

Jorn Andersen
Age: 39; Male; Telecom-worker
Living in Copenhagen, Denmark (which - hopefully - excuses my bad =
english).
2 children (half-time) 6 & 9 years old.
Once or twice a week selling "Socialistisk Arbejderavis" (small =
bi-weekly socialist paper). Member of "Internationale Socialister" (IS) =
a small organization - sister organization of ISO (US), SWP (UK) OCE =
(Greece) and others.

But back to guestion. I said it is a "real one". Because when you say:

my answer is: Yes
- but that "conflict of interest" is basically of the same kind as any =
other conflict of interest for workers in a capitalist world.
And socialists should give the same answer to these "conflicts of =
interest": Stress what unites workers - because class-unity encourages =
class struggle and only class struggle will do away with.

What I think is this:
Competion under capitalism is just as real for workers as it is for the =
capitalists. It's an integral part of capitalism. It's there every day: =
We compete to get a job ( there is a very real "conflict of interest" =
here! ). We compete to get an education ( ask any student ). So when you =
ask:

- I say: No - the conflict is a very real one. And when you ask:

 - my answer is: Yes - all these conflicts are results of capitalist =
labour market.

But I think workers are "duped" in another sense: That both sides of =
this "conflict of interet" - here: US and Mexican workers - would be =
better off by joining their struggles and direct it against the system =
and the bastards that make them compete.  The socialist answer is just =
as real as the conflict. There is - in my view - no contradiction =
between what socialists say about our "longer-term and greater good" and =
what we say in the struggle today against everything hat divides workers =
(at least not on this subject  :-)

Think of black slavery in the US (or elsewhere): Were white workers =
better off with their black brothers and sisters in chains?? Of course =
not! - Not that I suspect that Lisa (or others on this list) think so.

I put the point just to illustrate a very general point: That although =
capitalism divides workers (In the workers' heads: "I have other =
interests than my fellow workers") - at the same time workers under =
capitalism experience, that they are stronger in the struggle against =
the bosses (and therefor better conditions) when they unite. Both =
"ideas" are in most workers heads all the time - else we wouldn't have =
to hear all sorts of racist, male chauvinist, nationalist talk in the =
workplaces from time to time.

Which of the two sets of ideas will win is decided in the _real_ world =
by the _real_ class truggle - and to some extent by what socialists say: =
If we defend (or just accept) these divisions (border controls, racism, =
nationalism, sexual divisions of any sort - then we play into the hands =
of those who want to divide and rule us. Not only do we _betray_ the =
workers who have these ideas in their heads. We also postpone the day, =
when we can remove this material base for these ideas.

Internationalism is not just an "optional extra" for socialists - it's a =
very essential part in the day-to-day struggle as well as when =
day-to-day struggles develop into a struggle for workers power.

Conclusion: My full support to the contribution that triggered your =
question.

PS: The last point is true also in Denmark and Europe - but the more =
concrete we confront these ideas, the easier it is to show that only the =
bosses benefit from them.
