Liverpool vote
Below is a post on the result of the
secret postal ballot conducted under UK union law
of the sacked liverpool dockers. The vote is
notable in that recent strike votes at
mass meetings in the UK have ofetn not been
replicated in the secret ballots required
by law. Despite the Liverpool dockers
risking losing everything they have voted
to go on fighting. The TGWU Gen Sec is Bill Morris, not Bill
Jones
The ballot on the offer from Mersey Docks & Harbour Company to the Liverpool
dockers resulted in a more than five to one vote against.
The deal had only offered jobs back to 40 of the 500 sacked dockers and
20-25,000 pounds each severance pay to the rest.
In a press statement, T&GWU General Secretary, Bill Jones, accepted that the
men did not appear willing to accept anything less than their jobs back. He
called for the company to re-open negotiations.
