Thanks for your response. I agree; such a seminar would be valuable only if
it throws more light than heat on the subject. A major problem is with
sources of information. The Fujimori government has refused entry to
independent journalist (such as those from the BBC and Channel 4 who made the
film "People of Shining Path" in 1991-92). The government, further, has
attempted to impose a news "whiteout" on revolutionary activity outside of
Lima. They have been more than helped in this by a wonderfully compliant
media, as well as by figures within Peru's political establishment
(including within the decomposing "official" left. Information is, of
necessity, therefore gleaned from clandestine sources such as the excellent
New Flag, which is published in New York. Moreover, only overt
anti-communists are granted exit visas (often with generous academic
subsidies) to those who can be depended upon to spread lies about "Sendero"
abroad. So much of the seminar could probably be spent discussing sources,
etc. What do you think?
