marxism / feminism
Is anybody else here a fan of bell hooks? I'm reading her _Feminist
Theory: from margin to center_ 1984, and I'm impressed.
She delivers a solid critique of bourgeois white 'feminism', the
false universalization of the problems of middle class housewives and
the inevitable failure of liberal reformism when fundamental/radical
change is needed in order to achieve the desired 'reforms'.
She also makes a compelling argument for the linkage of struggle
against all forms of domination, male supremacy, white supremacy,
heterosexism, classism, etc. All are supported by the ideology of
hierarchical control and authoritarian coercion, and Liberal
individual rights. Failure to understand this linkage results in the
notion of a hierarchy of oppressions, in which one struggle or
another must take priority over the others. This is both unnecessary
and counter-productive.
What do you think of that?
I highly recommend this book. It is written clearly and to the
point.
