I stand corrected. Although, what this means in practical political terms
I have no idea. Irving Howe, another "social democrat", supported the war
in Vietnam while a left-liberal like Dr. Spock opposed it. Labels like
this don't go very far. My beef with Heilbroner is his statement in the
foreword that "Socialisms therefore constitute a kind of ongoing
experiment to discover what sorts of arrangements might repair the damage
wrought by the existing social order." If this his is idea of socialism,
then we will always have the capitalist system to contend with.

Louis: I misquoted Magdoff. What he said was the following:

"Our perspective on the issues raised in the book is so different from
that of the contributors that a proper treatment of the subject would
require the kind of major essay we are not able to undertake at this time."
