Perlo on Racism & Class

It is important to recognize that the Black people, like the Puerto Rican
and Chicano people, are DECISIVELY members of the WORKING CLASS, and they
are an essential ingredient of what we speak of as the multi-national
multi-racial U.S. WORKING CLASS. More than 80% of the total inome of
Blacks and Hispanics was earned as wages and salaries, as compared with
75% of the incomes of whites. While the GREAT MAJORITY of white people
are members of the WORKING CLASS also, capitalist and intermediate
sectors are much more important among the white population. THE
CAPITALIST CLASS IN THE UNITED STATES IS ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY WHITE. The
per capita PROPERTY income of whites is more than EIGHT times that of
Blacks, and more than SIX times that of Hispanics. (p. 71).
