Just to clarify, in case we continue this thread, Tim:
1. Please define a "writer."
2. Do you mean to include journalists inside your "writer's union"? In case
it isn't clear, I favor the journalistic model over the entertainment
industry model (I've worked in both). The former is much more adaptive to
the net and instantaneous world distribution because most of the work is
_performance oriented_. You are paid for the performance, the creation of
work, not residuals on how well the capitalist institutions can market it
for you in the years to come.
3. Writer's unions (as opposed to newspaper unions) generally exclude
writers who haven't cracked the industry hierarchy. This creates a very
backward organization. Because it demands you "pay your dues," and, finally
having struggled hard enough to enter this Writer Elite, one finds a high
percentage of members suddenly not interested in smashing that hierarchy.
Thus, they vehemently side with property institutions since they have become
part of it.
