The answers: Yes we need at least 500 companies selling widgets, or
as many as can make a living at it. NO, it is not silly to sell things on
TV. It's called commerce. You can sneer at it, but it pays the bills - or
would pay the bills if we weren't paying speculators and giving them rights
over our work.


I may have internalized a lot of Madison Avenue, but, somehow I
think that the appeal of socialism HAS to be more economic autonomy, not
less. As brilliant as the leaders of the revolution may be, they will not be
smart enough for me to trust with total economic domination. At least the
capitalists are divided and don't have the formal power of the state at their
disposal.


I insist that socialism is not the "better mousetrap" that the elite
can inflict on the working man, but democracy, pure, plain, ugly,
corn-dog-eatin', monster-truck-pull, democracy, in its highest form (nearly).
