To whom...,


It is all very nice to talk vaguely about "new forms" and even
"revolutions", but the fact remains that unionism is the most direct way to
confront the power of capital. Strikes and boycotts assert democratic,
political influence over the capitalist marketplace, and are thus the weapons
of capitalism. Capital is NOT generalized. If it were, the communists would
hardly have any reason to complain, would they. Capital is divided among
firms, and socialists have to exert democratic control over the capital those
firms hold.


Nothing in the inherent logic of unionism directs that unions must
simply bargain for wages and conditions within the static wage system.
Unions can bargain for direct, ownership and control of companies. They can
lower the speculative value of all capital that does not meet their demands
until such time as they have that control. Unions, as such, are, were, and
will be the brickwork of the socialist foundation. Otherwise, socialists
will find themselves repainting the signs and changing the letterhead instead
of getting rid of the boss.
