AGEN, France, Jan 16 (Reuter) - Striking staff at a petfood
factory said on Tuesday they are holding two managers hostage in
protest against the planned closure of the site.
Union representatives for the 143-strong staff at the plant,
in the southwest of the country, said that Daniel Boulet,
managing director of Spillers Petfood France, and his human
resources director Bernard Manhaval, had spent the night in the
factory after having been taken hostage on Monday during a
meeting of the works council.
The men can move freely within the building, one of many
sites of Europe's second biggest animal food producer.
The CGT and CFDT unions want the local prefect to appoint a
mediator to solve the conflict.
The striking staff want the closure plan to be withdrawn and
demand that Spillers' owner, Britain's Dalgety Plc, either
modernise the plant at Boe near Agen, or built a new production
unit there.
