A Race of Convicts
[T]hroughout the eighteenth century England routinely dumped paupers,
vagrants, and convicts onto American soil. It has been estimated that as
many as 30,000 English and 7,500 Irish had this unceremonious initiation
to the New World. <Reference available>. Not without reason, Samuel
Johnson once described Americans as a "race of convicts." (p. 11).
Garis estimates that between 1750 and 1770 some 20,000 convicts were sent
to Maryland alone. (p. 11).

Class in America," 1989 (updated & expanded edition).
