To Mr. Schwartz and others discussing the organic composition
of capital,
I think that you are overlooking something in the general argument
about increased mechanization. Firms start up all the time and need to buy
capital goods. Therefore capitalists are aware of the increased organic
composition of capital and seek to avoid it. Mechanizations compete, and
cheaper, less capital intensive mechanizations replace older ones.
Car factories before stamped metal body shells were far more capital
intensive per car. Plastic has replaced ceramics and metals because it
requires much less machinery (generally) to make things out of. Of course
there are myriad other examples.
In fact, lowering capital outlay is probably the driving force in
capitalism, rather than making capital more sophisticated.
