Strike affects package deliveries in New York: WSJ
NEW YORK (Reuter) - A strike involving 30,000 New York City
building-maintenance workers has affected deliveries from
shippers such as the United Parcel Service of America and
Federal Express, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
UPS drivers, who are represented by the International
Brotherhood of Teamsters, are refusing to cross picket lines, a
union spokesman told the paper.
Managers at the shipper are delivering the packages in plain
clothes to the 1,000 buildings affected by the strike, a company
spokesman told the paper.
Federal Express, whose drivers are non-union, has a policy
that gives drivers a choice about entering a building if they
are concerned about personal safety, the paper said.
Both companies are making alternative arrangements for
getting the packages to their destination, including allowing
customers to pick up packages outside buildings from drivers,
the paper said.
