Re: Romania, icons of nationalism/ 'racism'

Great post, Lisa! I haven't been following the Transylvanian movement
like I should (being easily distracted by Bosnia and Moldova).
Reminded me of Split: this is a Croat city on the Adriatic. At
its harbor edge is Diocletian's Palace, an enormous Imperial
castle-palace that now serves as a sort of architectural anthology.
After the Western empire fell, each successor state (Justinian's
revanche, some slavs, Venetians, Turks, etc.) occupied the Palace and
modified it, each newcomer encrusting onto the relics of the previous
ones. Walking through the structure now - and it is not walled off, but
rather threaded through the modern city - you walk under delicate
Venetian walkways, Ottoman turrents, through Roman catacombs... and now
alongside Coca-Cola banners.
Nothing really fascist here. Although I nearly got in a fight
with a myserious squadron of somebody's bodyguards just outside...
