NEW YORK (Reuter) - Caterpillar Inc has suspended or fired
workers under the new work rules the company has placed on its
unionized workers after a 17-month strike, the Wall Street
Journal reported Friday.
Caterpillar has dismissed or suspended about 50 workers
under the rules that prohibit materials such as buttons or
t-shirts that refer to the labor dispute, while United Auto
Worker figures claim 88 have been disciplined, the paper said.
Labor experts told the paper that the work rules between the
union and the construction-equipment maker could lead to a test
of how much a company can limit expression and of worker rights.
Caterpillar told the paper it has established the standards
to ensure order and productivity, since the workers that were
once on strike work with workers who crossed picket lines.
Glenn Zipp, the National Labor Relations Board's regional
director in Peoria, Ill., told the paper that he believes the
work rules to be too broad. He would not say whether he would
recommend a court injunction against the company, the paper
said.
