QUITO, Jan 8 (Reuter) - Ecuadoran teachers, who went on
strike last week demanding better pay, threatened on Monday to
close major roads and paralyse the country if the government
does not soon yield to all their demands.
``We have decided to close down roads throughout the
country. We will do this with the help of workers of the
Farmer's Social Security (Institute),'' National Teacher's Union
President Stalin Vargas told reporters.
The strike has left 2.1 million children without classes
since Friday. Vargas added that protesters will block traffic on
Ecuador's main arteries starting on Tuesday.
A similar measure taken in 1994 by indigenous groups stopped
short of paralysing this tiny Andean nation, but caused several
million dollar's worth of losses to farmers who were not able to
take their crops to the cities.
The government on Thursday accepted two of the three demands
introduced by the union, which include a 25 percent salary
increase starting January and a $45 monthly bonus.
The administration, however, still refuses to grant another
$45 monthly bonus demanded by the union.
Teachers' starting salary in Ecuador amounts to about $110 a
month.
The union's decision to close Ecuador's main roads could be
aggravated by a possible transportation strike scheduled for
next Monday. Transportation workers are protesting a recently
introduced fuel price hike.
