NEW YORK (Reuter) - Striking service workers with
red-and-white placards were among the most visible people who
braved the blizzard in New York Monday, leaving supervisors to
shovel snow and salt sidewalks outside some of the city's most
famous buildings.
``We're dedicated employees,'' said Gregory DiGesu, one of
four strike captains at the Empire State Building. ``They'd be
expecting us if we were working.''
Some 30,000 members of the Services Employees International
Union local walked off the job Thursday morning when contract
talks with management broke down over a proposed new wage
structure. The pickets have been a common site in midtown and
downtown Manhattan for five days, despite the bitter cold, snow
and freezing winds.
On Monday, almost two feet of snow prevented unionists from
bringing cars into the city to sit in and warm up so they took
refuge in coffee shops to organize and keep warm.
