    MARSEILLE, France, Jan 7 (Reuter) - The public transport
authority in the Mediterranean port of Marseille gave up trying
to lay on a minimum service on Sunday, after clashes between
strikers and police and non-striking workers.
    The RTM authority said it would run no bus services because
of the threat of attacks facing drivers who defied the
32-day-old strike over pay and working conditions.
    The authority had on Saturday managed to lay on five percent
of normal services but three people were injured after strikers
threw stones and other projectiles at police escorting drivers
out of one depot.
    Police had previously used force to clear bus depots
occupied by the protesters.
    Underground railway services were still running under police
surveillance following disruption by strikers over the past
week.
    Several buses which made it out of the depots on Saturday
had their tyres punctured and many non-strikers refused to brave
the wrath of the demonstrators.
    The stoppage is the last remaining major dispute in France
after public sector strikes against government plans to reform
welfare spending ended just before Christmas.
