In my view the boom of the 50's can be explained in Marxian terms
this way: it was the beginning of true capitalism. After the initial
crises in the newly important stock markets, and the wars and depressions
that followed, capitalism was finally ready. Capital had truly become a
commodity, and the "publicly" held corporation - the great vehicle of
capitalism - could rise to ascendency. Money-capital was finally king.
Wartime production, and government intervention to stabilize the
market were necessary because of the enormous fallout over the crash and the
depression. Wartime production also made fortunes on which the new
corporations could be based. Also the enormous scale of war, and the
unthinkability of another great conflict gave the ruling class time to get
rich instead of fighting wars. Insofar as they got rich making useless
weapons, well, think o fit as a massive corporate welfare.
