Subject: Belgium Airline Strike/other notes
ONTARIO -- Phillips Lighting and 3M plants in London are asking
the Canadian Auto Workers union to pay for losses incurred by
the one day work stoppage Dec.11. At another (unnamed) company
30 strikers have been suspended for taking part in the strike.
(-CBC radio news Dec.19)
BRUSSELS Dec.20-- 2,000 Sabina Airline workers battled police
at the airport disrupting flights. Police used water cannons.
STrikers are protesting government cuts of pensions and layoffs
as part of Belgium's compliance with EEC currency rules. The
govt. has suspended existing collective agreements and imposed
a 3 year wage freeze.
The unions ask, Why do we want a European Currency if it means
losing our jobs?
On Dec.19 Belgian rail workers held a wildcat strike (-Radio
Netherlands)
Radio Sweden reports SAS air flights to Brussels were diverted
as no passengers could be boarded.

EUROPE
There are 1-3 million homeless people in the EEC countries. The
EEC has no agreements to guarantee the right of housing. National
standards are high in most countries, but are not enforced.
Those at most risk of homelessness are the unemployed, and casual
workers. Young adults are the fastest growing group. 40% are
women with or without children.
