Social Wage
I was very pleased to see Eric Nilsson raise this important theoretical
point at this time. As people start to sum up events in France more
theoretically, I would like to ask if it is considered that Juppe was
attacking not only the direct wages of the state employees but the
social wage of the population.
The British Finance Minister, Clarke said, very revealing last week, that
of course the right wing in France had not prepared as shrewdly as the British
Conservatives, and were therefore in a mess. The relentless, cunning,
intrusion of the market principles into the state sector in Britain, has
been a very successful right wing attack in breaking up the power of the
unions in the state sector and in lowering the social wage, to make Britain,
as they think, competitive as a low wage cost, industrial economy.
Chris, London.
