Private mail
One of the valuable things about this list is that
it is a cross roads and a meeting place. A lot of
private mail takes place around the edges of the list.
I am discovering however this can be a pleasant but real
hazard of volunteering to the almost powerless
role of co-moderator, alongside Lisa and Bryan.
In addition to feeling that one ought at least to skim every post,
there are a significant number of private posts, in response
perhaps to an attempt to be a bit proactive in steering the
discussion into the conflicts that IMO are really important.
These posts are often a bit tentative but also very creative,
but there is no time to develop them into a private thread.
For example Jukka has sent me some very interesting posts, in
response to my challenge to the list to address Marx's point about
the human needs of the imagination, and he has done it from the
point of view of a sociologist, about which I feel especially
uncertain, so this is very stimulating.
Could I encourage people to regard all these ideas as the
property of the list, which can be developed by further
exchanges, and if in doubt to post to the list, rather than
to post privately, to me.
Thanks for example, Gerwin, for your reply to the list on Bildungsbuergertum.
Chris, London
BTW I will of course obviously have to take more of a back seat
soon, as I am in danger of burning up, and I personally think there
is an argument for some more moderators. Amongst us I think we took
personally to heart the worries about the flames in the
previous couple of weeks, when we felt pretty powerless. It is welcome
that peace seems to have broken out on the US eastern seaboard,
entirely voluntarily out of understanding of the greater good, and without
NATO troops having to be sent in.
