        Were these actual radioactive shells -- shells which were used to
spread radioactivity as a weapon -- or were they just shells turned out
of DEPLETED URANIUM?

        I don't know how radioactive such depleted uranium shells are, but
they are simply made out of uranium because uranium is HEAVY.  Being more
massive than steel or lead, they can `throw' farther and more accurately.

        Perhaps they have a radioactive `side-benefit'...
