And what if there *were* something bourgeois about it? When Marx talked
about the civilizing effects of capital, he was talking in large part about
bourgeois culture and science. Of course what made him a revolutionary and
not an apologist was that he thought this "civilizing" effect was highly
distorted and rested on exploitation of masses who were partly de-civilized
in the process. But just because something is bourgeois doesn't mean it's
bad - it has to be analyzed critically. I still give thanks for my
hyper-bourgeois education at Yale; taught me to hate the ruling class more
effectively. But boneheaded solidarity with working class culture ain't for
me.
