TNC's 1 - Canadian

I welcome the discussions about international finance, and the comments
by Doug on UK overseas investment. (I thought we did not feel that
powerful.)
And Will plugging away on transnationals; and Steve's very illuminating
post. Here's a bit about a transnational, not specially chosen for
Jim.
Yesterday's Guardian, London:
CYANIDE RIVER NAMED DISASTER AREA
"More than 120 miles of Guyana's Essequibo River was declared an
environmental disaster area by the government yesterday as up to
300 million gallons of cyanide-saturated sludge flowed downstream
and engineers failed to stop more seeping from a breached earth
dam serving the Omai goldmine.
The World Health Organisation ... questioned the Canadian mining company's
water sampling which suggested that it was safe to drink and use the river
water 45 miles downstream of the stricken mine.
....
It emerged yesterday that there have been at least four minor spills
from the Omai goldmine in recent years and that despite warnings from
environmentalists the company refused to conduct environmental or
engineering audits.
...
The mine is Latin America's second largest...
Environmentalists and members of the opposition Working People's
Alliance called for a full investigation into the use of cyanide in
the mining of gold, the closure of the mine, and the prosecution of the
company."
