General S. Butler; Addition to earlier query
- Subject: General S. Butler; Addition to earlier query

I'm still looking for the quote by Shoup, but in digging through my files I
found a photocopy of part of the Major General Smedley Butler quote, and
thought perhaps some on the list would not have seen it before. (Date 1935
"I spent 33 years and four months in active service as a member of the
...Marine Corps....And during that period I spent most of my time being a
high-class muscle man for Big Business...Thus I helped make Mexico and
especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti
and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank to collect revenues in....I
helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers
in 1909 to 1912. I brought light to the Dominican Repbulic for American sugar
interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras 'right' for American fruit companies
in 1903."
