Argument is indeed rough and "psychologizing and doing penance" will not
resolve fundamental differences in understanding. Yet, if we can rise
above our petty egos and concern for our professional reputations to
admit mistakes in exposition, judgment and/or ideas, then that is a step
in the right direction.
We must remember what is important. What is important is our ability to
understand the world *and* to change it. Everything else must take a back
seat.
