Subject: Re: Value and exchange value

Jerry asks a number of questions about the relationship
between Marx and the economists whom he criticised. He
is probably right here, though the views of these early
19th century economists are no longer of great import.

What is important is whether one can construct a coherent
and useful theory about value on the basis of what
Marx wrote. I think that one can. I would not quite
express it the way he does viz.
" Let's see if we can understand each other better. Commodities have
the
two-fold character of having use-value and value. This is not simply a
definition but expresses a dialectical relationship. Value has both
quantitative dimensions and qualitative dimensions. Qualitative
dimensions concern the social relations of commodity production.
"

I would rather say that value has a quantitative aspect, and
a historically specific form of manifestation. This form of
manifestation is, in a commodity producing society, exchange
value.
