I agree with you on the above point. I am impressed with the fact that
all of the participants in this thread have shown that we can discuss
theoretical issues with each other in good faith. It is not often that
Marxist economists can get together, discuss an issue, and agree
that some formulations and ideas are better than others. We might not
be agreeing on all points, but we are at least making an honest effort to
understand each other. It is a very good sign for our list.

We do not agree, though, on our interpretations of productive and
unproductive labor. Your ideas on state production, state capitalism,
and the importance of the "production and reproduction of human
life" concept to the distinction between productive and unproductive labor,
are different from my own. That is OK. Simply referring to what Marx
wrote on this subject does not resolve this debate. Surely, we have to
look at what Marx wrote critically. We will probably not agree, but, if
we can continue to develop our ideas through explanation and really
listen to other perspectives, then we will all benefit.
