Check our Chapters 8 and 12.
If you are really pressed for time, a *very* brief answer to Carroll's
question is given in the entry under "value" by Simon Mohun in Tom
Bottomore ed. _A Dictionary of Marxist Thought_(Cambridge, Harvard
University Press, 1983, p.507-511).
This concept, however, can not be understood simply be reading a few
expressions or quotes: it requires more serious study on the part of
those who are interested in Marx's political economy.
