revolt against civilization

In the Spring 1994 issue of *Wildcat* there is an article about marxism
vs. the anti-civilization current which touches on an example of class
struggle leading to the end of a civilization, namely, the abandonment of
the Mayan civilization. Apparently, the lower orders got tired of being
sacrificed to the gods, went on the rampage, killed all the priests and
the ruling caste, and turned away from the "progress" of civilization,
leaving the rain forest to reclaim the city-states. That gave them about
700 years of respite, until the Spaniards arrived on the scene.
