"At a time when foreign ministers of European states queue up to
visit Iran and enlist its support for the 'war against terrorism,'
the Iranian state is busy arresting anyone who can expose its own
'state terrorism.'" (Coordinating Committee of Workers Left Unity -
Iran, 5 Nov. 01)

BUSH TAPS IRAN-CONTRA VETERANS

* Former Assistant U.S. Secretary of State Elliott Abrams was
appointed on June 28, 2001 to U.S. President George W. Bush's
National Security Council. Abrams was a major figure in the
Iran-contra scandal [=American arms sold to Iran, to negotiate the
release of hostages taken in Lebanon, with secret funds from the arms
sale given to terrorist Contras] that emerged in late 1986; he
pleaded guilty in 1991 to two misdemeanor charges of lying to
Congress but was pardoned by then-President George Bush (1989-1993)
in 1992. Abrams now serves as a senior director of the Office for
Democracy, Human Rights, and International Operations. (Source: New
York Times 6/30/01)

* "Now Bush II has given Abrams a post that rewards his special
experience. In the proud ranks of America's public servants, he will
join other Iran-contra vets: Secretary of State Colin Powell; Deputy
Secretary of State Richard Armitage; Otto Reich, assistant secretary
of state for inter-American affairs; and?John Negroponte?U.N.
ambassador." (Terry J. Allen, In These Times August 2001)
