Edward Said Speaks at Ohio University
2001 Baker Peace Conference
Ohio University
Language, Literature, and Peace in the Middle East
This year's conference focuses on the role of language and literature
in the waging of war and peace in the Middle East. Specifically, we
hope to investigate the ways in which language and literature
function to construct and maintain political and cultural boundaries
between Jews and Palestinians and reinforce group identities and
representations of the other.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
Edward Said, University Professor of English and Comparative
Literature at Columbia University, and one of the most prominent
intellectuals in the United States today. His writing regularly
appears in the Guardian of London, Le Monde Diplomatique and the
Arab-language daily al-Hayat, printed in every Arab capital in the
world. Said has lectured at more that 150 universities and colleges
in the United States, Canada and Europe. His writing, translated into
26 languages, includes Orientalism (1978), an highly influential
examination of the way the West perceives the Islamic world, The
World, the Text and the Critic (1983), Culture and Imperialism
(1993), The End of the Peace Process: Oslo and After (2000), and Out
of Place, a 1999 memoir chronicling his early years in Jerusalem, his
family's exile to Cairo, and his education in the United States....
