Historical note: For what it's worth, "Cop Killer" was not the
first, or even near to the first, time in u.s. history that that
theme has been celebrated. See Woody Guthrie:
Pretty Boy grabbed a log chain,
The deputy grabbed his gun,
And in the fight that followed,
He laid that deputy low.
It's a fine song, one of Guthrie's best.
A writer in *Critical Inquiry* a few years ago argued
that what got everyone upset about Cop Killer was
that white suburban youth were listening to it.

P.S. Query: Has anyone ever written a song on Attica? There
ought to be: it's one of the more dramatic incidents that illustrates
the truth of LBJ's claim that if you wanted to know how the U.S.
acted abroad, look at how it acts at home.
