Social Darwinism is not based on the same logic as biological evolution
(social Darwinism came before the theory of natural selection). It makes
perfect sense for a Puritan culture to accept individual failure and
non-intervention of the state in the god-given order of things, wherein
individual failure is indicative of exclusion for the other-worldly, on
the one hand, and to reject a secular theory positing the natural
development of animals from lower to higher forms with no guiding hand, on
the other hand. There is no paradox or contradiction here. It makes for a
fun but ignorant polemic.
