I hope Katha wasn't kidding, because an affirmative action policy at home
sounds like a wonderful idea. The problem is that given the political
values of privacy and private lives that dominate American's thinking
about justice it would simply be impossible to implement. Even suggesting
it would make a politician look like a nut. As long as men are not beating
or torturing women (and explicit violence still is a difficult thing to
intrude in a home for) the government stands no chance of intervening.
Women and children are oppressed in many ways that are justified by
privacy and private life. Moreover, Americans do not see women doing
housework as oppression. This is regarded as the natural background of
American life, and, as such, women choose this arrangement. Governments
intrude too much already, will be the line against the movement for equity
in the home. That this situation prevails with the apparent consent of
women is a testament to the subtle and hidden ways systems of domination
operate.
