Fwd: [BRC-NEWS] Quote of the Day: Julie Canny

"Men prey on women simply because it's easy, fun, and addicting. No amount
of reasoning with men will stem violence against women. What WILL stem
violence against women is if every woman on earth decided to rise up, arm
herself, train in martial arts, and fight back against aggression. If
little monster Mitchell (and make no mistake, that's EXACTLY what he is)
wound up with a bullet in his head the moment some female saw him with a
gun, the message would ring out to all the other little monsters in the
world -- be it Montreal, Jonesboro, or Bosnia -- that hunting season on
women is officially over."

"This would provoke a number of reactions among men, including increasing
violence as men panicked due to losing their favorite targets and having
to cope with themselves and the universe. The addict will go into
jonesing, no doubt about it. Violence against women would skyrocket --
temporarily. But if women were prepared mentally to do whatever it takes
to be free, including (know that this scares me also) waging a world war
of unprecedented magnitude and fury, men would eventually get the idea
that women just aren't prey anymore."

"I realize that many people would accuse me of having a highly patriarchal
view of power relations. I fear they may be right. But why is patriarchy
so prevalent? Because it's effective. Why is it effective? Because it's
opportunistic, ruthless, and realistic in its perception of power.
Machiavelli, Clausewitz, and Sun Tzu work. Why? Because they see reality.
As much as I love Starhawk and Goddess spirituality, I think it has
adopted a very unrealistic view of the nature of power. I feel that women
need to quit fooling themselves into believing that there's "women's
power" and "men's power." Nope. It's just power, and women are poorly
educated in its uses and acquisition. This must change, if we are ever to
get anywhere in terms of gaining actual equality and freedom."
